Nancy is beginning her third-year rotations in internal medicine, and is feeling overwhelmed by the patient load. She does her best to review all of the charts for the patients assigned to her before morning rounds, and comes to rounds with her notes in hand. The attending has been called away, leaving the senior resident to conduct rounds with the medical students and junior residents. He asks everyone many questions, putting them on the spot. When it is Nancy’s turn, she draws a blank, causing the senior resident to get frustrated and ask, “How did you even pass second year if you cannot answer these questions?” Nancy feel her eyes welling with tears and leaves as it is all too much. She does not see the senior resident as he leaves post-call, but knows she will have to face him the next day and is unsure of what to do.
