Faculty Development Workshops
The UCLA-DGSOM Center for Educational Development & Research has announced the 2014-15 Faculty Development Workshop Series. Additional information can be found at the Faculty Development page.
October 8, 2014 - "Teaching with Clickers"
Chris O'Neal, Ph.D., Director of Faculty Development
Audience Response Systems (or "Clickers") have become a common feature in Medical Education lectures. In this workshop we'll review the clickers used at DGSOM (the Turning Point system) and best practices in designing clicker-based activities that provide real-time information about student comprehension of material. Light lunch provided.
November 4, 2014 - "Making Lectures Effective for Clinical Learners"
Chris O'Neal, Ph.D., Director of Faculty Development
The considerable time divide between the didactic portions of the medical curriculum and the clinical years means that much of what students learn in lecture during the first two years is forgotten by the time they reach the second two years of clinical practice. In this workshop we'll discuss how to frame and deliver lectures so that learners retain the information presented and are able to call on it when in the clinic. Light dinner provided
December 1, 2014 - "Teaching at the Bedside"
LuAnn Wilkerson, Ed.D., Senior Associate Dean for Medical Education
Neveen El-Farra, M.D.
Jessica O'Connell, M.D.
Armed with a few simple teaching tools and an understanding what it takes to teach adults, participants will learn skills that will rapidly prepare them for teaching medical learner skills, knowledge, and attitudes in the clinical setting. Light dinner provided.
January 20, 2015 - "Teaching Strategies to Promote Clinical Reasoning"
Chris O'Neal, Ph.D., Director of Faculty Development
Participants in this workshop will discuss the development of medical learners' clinical reasoning skills and learn key strategies to promote that reasoning. Light lunch provided.
February 18, 2015 - "Teaching Medical Learners High Value, Cost-Conscious Care"
Chris O'Neal, Ph.D., Director of Faculty Development
Carl Stevens, M.D., M.P.H., Director of Curriculum Development
As more and more medical systems moved to capitated reimbursement systems, doctors will be expected to make diagnostic and treatment decisions that fully incorporate consideration of "value" (value = outcomes/costs). In this workshop we'll talk about the concept of value and how best to train medical learners in value-based healthcare decision making. Light dinner provided.
March 19, 2015 - "Giving Efficient Clinical Feedback"
Chris O'Neal, Ph.D., Director of Faculty Development
Participants in this workshop will discuss the development of medical learners' clinical reasoning skills and learn key strategies to promote that reasoning. Light lunch provided.
April 9, 2015 - "Using Simulation to Explore Clinical Teaching"
Chris O'Neal, Ph.D., Director of Faculty Development
Yue Ming Huang, Ed.D., Director of Education, UCLA Simulation Center
Simulation has taken a front-and-center role in the training of medical learners, but has been less commonly used to train faculty in "how to teach." In this workshop, participants will take part in a clinical teaching training scenario in the DGSOM Simulation Center. Guided feedback and discussion afterwards will be used to explore best practices in clinical education and mentoring. Light dinner provided.
May 20, 2015 - "Flipping the Classroom for Medical Education"
Chris O'Neal, Ph.D., Director of Faculty Development
Over the past two years, a number of thinkers in the future of education have pushed the idea of "flipping" the classroom: moving content delivery to video watched outside of class and using class time for active processing of material. In this workshop, we'll talk about the pros and cons of using this approach in various medical education settings and give participants hands on experience learning and teaching in a flipped class. Light lunch provided.
June 11, 2015 - "Getting Involved in Medical Education Research and Scholarship"
Chris O'Neal, Ph.D., Director of Faculty Development
Sebastian Uijtdehaage, Ph.D., Director of Research
This workshop is intended for anyone interested in documenting medical teaching and learning innovations via research. The field of medical education research will be introduced, as well as strategies for performing research, getting published, and featuring that scholarship in your tenure and promotion decisions. Light lunch provided.
