Advancing the boundaries of human knowledge
Discovery Science is investigation into the essential truths of the natural world. It advances the boundaries of human knowledge and furthers the frontiers of science. Findings from discovery science provide the foundation upon which all technological and biomedical advances are built.
One of the world’s leading public research universities, UCLA has a deep, rich history of exceptional discovery science. By no means an exhaustive list, the following are some of the accomplishments that have come out ot the extensive research community at the University of California, Los Angeles.
Housed on a single campus with a history and culture of collaborative research, the very architecture of UCLA fosters the type of interdisciplinary science that gives rise to high-impact discoveries.

Graduate students are the driving force for biomedical research
Scientific research advances the boundaries of human knowledge, providing the foundation upon which all technological and biomedical breakthroughs are built. The engine of discovery at major universities like UCLA are the brilliant, creative and hardworking graduate student researchers. These Ph.D. students do virtually all of the hands-on work that fuels both basic discovery and clinical research. Exceptional graduate students are recruited to UCLA from top undergraduate programs across the country, and then choose a lab and faculty mentor based on the best match between the lab’s research focus and their own creative interests. Although biomedical research projects are managed and supervised by professors, the productivity, creativity, and discovery often comes from Ph.D. students.
