Good science is safe science, and we want to make it easy for you to practice that in your labs. The Research Safety Office coordinates the administrative structure for basic science research safety in the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. Our mission is to help researchers understand the regulatory and compliance requirements for research at UCLA and to promote open communication about and adoption of safe laboratory practices. This is primarily achieved through the activities of the SOM Safety Committee and its members.
Where possible, the office is charged with the development of tools that help researchers satisfy these requirements efficiently. The office supports the SOM Safety Committee, chaired by the Research Safety Director, who serves as the liaison between the research community, school leadership, and other campus research safety stakeholders, including the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research, the Office of the Safety Oversight Committees, and campus Environmental Health & Safety.
Welcome to the David Geffen School of Medicine’s Research Safety webpage. Many resources and services that support research safety have been developed by different groups at UCLA, and they are gathered here for the convenience of DGSOM Researchers. Whether you are setting up a UCLA lab for the first time or checking in for the latest information, you’ll find a variety of resources here.
The Research Safety Office is here to help navigate research safety oversight at UCLA with special attention to the particular needs of DGSOM researchers. We’re fortunate to maintain strong relationships with campus and school leadership at an institution that takes research safety as seriously as it does good science. We hope to help researchers satisfy the necessary compliance requirements as efficiently as possible and redirect focus to the operation of safe research labs.
Next Meeting: Tueseday, December 12 from 10:30 am - 12:00 pm.
Meetings of the SOM Safety Committee occur on the 2nd Tuesday of March, June, September, and December from 10:30 am - 12:00 pm.
The SOM Safety Committee meets quarterly to hear updates relevant to the research community at UCLA, and organizes the updates for DGSOM research audience. Campus stakeholders bring the updates directly to us, and the committee members disseminate that information back to labs in their home departments.
The committee is chaired by the Research Safety Director, Erin Quinn, and is comprised of DGSOM Department Safety Coordinators and representatives from a variety of campus offices, including campus EH&S, UCLA Health Emergency Preparedness, Campus Office of Emergency Management, DGSOM Facilities, and the OVCR.
Updates from Q2 include:
Radiation Use Permit applications will move into SafetyNet in January 2018.
Responsible to their home departments and advised by the Research Safety Director, Department Safety Coordinators encourage the open communication of research safety and compliance updates to researchers in their home departments. They represent the interests of their departments to the school and work on projects that help achieve their department’s research safety and compliance goals. See resources for Department Safety Coordinators →
There is an intricate but necessary framework of departments and roles in place to ensure all labs remain compliant. To better understand how the relevant committees, offices, and directors relate to one another and to your work, we encourage you to review the Lab Safety Relationship Chart on the Resources page.
