UCLA Health profile →

Kathryn Melamed, MD

I am a pulmonary and critical care physician with an interest in medical education. I completed medical school here at UCLA, and I am so grateful for the wonderful four years that I spent as a student here. After medical school, I competed my internal medicine residency at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and then returned to UCLA for my pulmonary and critical care medicine fellowship.

I have always had a strong interest in medical education, particularly at the medical student level. During my residency, I taught at Harvard Medical School in their problem based learning course. Later, when I returned to UCLA for fellowship, I continued to teach both residents and medical students.

After completion of my medical training, I stayed on as faculty at UCLA. I split my clinical time between Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center and UCLA-Olive View Medical Center. I am currently the associate program director for the pulmonary and critical care medicine fellowship program, and as of September, I will assume the role of program director. I have completed two years of the DGSOM Medical Education Fellowship certificate program, and I continue to use the skills learned in this course to develop education curriculum at the fellowship level. I also served on the Doctoring 1 curriculum development team for three years, and I look forward to bringing this experience to the Educators for Excellence curriculum.

On a personal note, I am originally from the Washington DC area but now in Los Angeles to stay. While I will always consider myself an east coaster at heart, I am an enthusiastic California transplant. In my free time, I enjoy spending time outdoors with my husband, young daughter, and exuberant dog.
