Monica Sifuentes, MD, FAAP
Professor of Pediatrics, General Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, Harbor-UCLA Medical Center
As an Educator for Excellence, I currently serve as teaching faculty for the Foundations of Practice course at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA while my primary clinical responsibilities are in the Department of Pediatrics at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, an affiliated hospital caring for the underserved in Los Angeles County. I am the site director for the Pediatric Clerkship at Harbor-UCLA and the Associate Program Director for the core Pediatric Residency program. My passions include teaching general pediatrics and adolescent medicine, mentoring students and trainees at all levels, and being of service to my patients and community.
I grew up in East Los Angeles and attended twelve years of parochial school before embarking on my college experience on the East Coast. Being a first-generation college graduate was an eye-opening and humbling experience which allowed me to carefully reflect upon my reasons for pursuing a career in medicine. After college, I moved to the Bay Area in California to attend medical school and then returned to LA to complete my pediatric training at Harbor-UCLA. It proved to be the perfect combination of hands-on clinical care, amazing medical experiences, service to my community, and advocacy for those most vulnerable in our society. After gaining additional clinical experience at a community clinic in Long Beach for a few years following my training, I returned to Harbor-UCLA to join the faculty and there I remain, loving every minute of it!
My family is my lifeline, my support, and my strength. Recently having become “empty nesters”, my husband and I enjoy quiet dinners together, talk about travel, and caring for our new puppy and garden.
