2022: A Reflection

UCLA team science is solving scientific challenges yielding the power of multi-disciplinary collaboration and innovation.

Geffen Hall
In 2022, our DGSOM community continued progress toward a vision that ultimately enables people to live fulfilling and healthy lives.

The basic science and clinical departments in collaboration with the seven research themes brought together clinicians and scientists to make advances in healthcare, bringing discoveries from bench to bedside. Our team science approach to investigation and infrastructure investments led to enhanced collaboration and innovation across disciplines, departments, the UCLA health system, and campus.

In education, we embarked on our second year of the HEALS curriculum (Healer, Educator, Advocate, Leader, Scholar), which was designed to evolve with innovative and accelerated changes in science and medicine. The curriculum was designed to help students succeed in the modern innovative healthcare system, geared toward new educational opportunities, and has been well received by faculty and students.

Throughout 2022, faculty, staff, trainees, and students were dedicated to serving our community by providing healthcare to those in need and mentoring young people who are exploring careers in medicine and science. We are continuing to build our community partnerships to improve access to healthcare and address community needs.

We’ve continued our commitment to the development of a diverse workforce by providing resources for career development support, mentoring programs, and the recruitment of outstanding, diverse faculty that excel in clinical care, research, and education. We participated in the Mentor Professor and Rising to the Challenge programs, which enabled the recruitment of faculty underrepresented in medicine. New mentorship programs are fostering career development for junior faculty.

The 2022 Reflection highlights only some of the accomplishments of this past year, which are representative of the many DGSOM achievements that advance our mission. I am grateful for everyone’s contributions, which enable us to achieve our commitment to excellence in education, research, clinical care, and community engagement.

With our profound gratitude,
