Request New Dean's Office Support

Departments, Major Centers, and Institutes that report directly to the DGSOM Dean may request financial support from the Dean to fund academic and programmatic investments that maintain and enhance the DGSOM’s status of excellence.

Such institutional endeavors include, but are not limited to:

  • The advancement of interdisciplinary research
  • The implementation of a world class program for precision health and genomic medicine
  • The advancement of health and health care for all through research
  • The development of a diverse faculty, trainee and staff body
  • The strengthening of our education programs
  • The development of biomedical innovation and technology

Chairs and Institute/Center Directors may submit requests for Dean’s support every quarter. Requests for support for urgent retentions may be submitted off-cycle.

Request Deadlines

  • Q1: July 31 
  • Q2: October 30 
  • Q3: January 31 
  • Q4: April 30

Request Review Criteria

An advisory committee will review all requests using consistent evaluation criteria that allows for fair prioritization in alignment with the strategic priorities of the DGSOM.

The advisory committee uses the following evaluation criteria:

  • Does the proposal align with the strategic priorities and mission of the DGSOM?
  • What is the positive impact of the proposal beyond the requesting Department or Unit?
  • Is the request also a priority for one or more Research Themes?
  • Does the proposal further scholarship, innovation and discovery?
  • Does the proposal advance diversity within the DGSOM, including, but not limited to, gender, ethnicity, academic/career stage, etc.?
  • If the proposal is for start-up funding for a new initiative, are plans in place to achieve self-sufficiency?
  • How will success be measured for the proposed initiative/program/faculty action?
  • Is the department/unit willing to be a financial partner with the Dean, Health System, and/or other departments to fund this initiative?
  • Does the proposal duplicate or overlap with other efforts in the originating unit, DGSOM, UCLA Health or UCLA campus?
  • Have contributions from other units been solicited and obtained?
