Each year, Human Genetics organizes a one-day academic retreat for members of the scientific community to gather together and share about the latest advances in their fields of study. Prestigious guest speakers are often invited to present alongside distinguished members of our own department. Poster sessions are held in which students and postdocs showcase the wide breadth of research that is conducted here at UCLA. The event provides a great oppportunity for academia to socialize and network with their peers, while celebrating the accomplishments we have achieved thus far.
For the past 10 years, the Statistical Genetics group here at UCLA has worked together with leading faculty and researchers from outside institutions to offer an intensive, five-day course on state-of-the-art statistical methods widely used in science today. Instructors will introduce participants to the theoretical aspects of current analysis techniques, while hands-on exercises with the Mendel statistical software, developed right here at UCLA Human Genetics, will help emphasize the practical aspects that are vital to success. Recent iterations of the class have been held in international locations such as Barcelona and Melbourne, where students can learn more about the research of their peers around the world.
The Speaker Series is an ongoing feature in the department whereby distinguished researchers are invited to present their insights on today's most intriguing topics in Genetics and other related fields. The seminars are hosted by students, postdocs, and faculty in Human Genetics and are open to public attendance. During regular school quarters, they are typically held on Mondays 11am-12pm in the 1st floor conference room of the Gonda Research Building. Learn more about the series.
