During MEF 1, fellows are introduced to theories of teaching and learning in medicine and are educated in medical education approaches. As part of the fellowship training, participants will be supported in the design, implementation and evaluation of a curricular innovation.
The fellowship requires a departmental plan for the release of 10% of the faculty member's academic time for the period of one year. Each fellow will be required to participate in a bi-weekly seminar, and expected to develop a specific curricular innovation employing evidence-based strategies and learning theories. As well, integrating a comprehensive evaluation plan grounded in appropriate theories and models will be a part of this curriculum, which will be targeted to the fellows’ educational responsibilities in their respective departments.
Prepare fellows to be “scholarly teachers,” whose teaching practice is informed and enhanced by foundational principles of teaching and learning, and who channel these into the creation of teaching innovations in their own teaching.
