UCLA Neuroscience Research Theme

Dear Colleagues,

We are requesting proposals for collaborative projects across the whole range of neuroscience between UCLA Faculty and Faculty at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot Israel. The collaborative effort, the UCLA/Weizmann Collaboration in Neuroscience, is supported by matching funds from the two institutions, a total sum of $450,000 over 3 years for each side ($900,00 overall). The goal of this effort is to promote compelling collaborative projects between scientists at the two institutions. We also anticipate that additional funds will be raised to support further efforts in the UCLA/Weizmann Collaboration in Neuroscience. As part of the collaborative effort, UCLA will host a joint meeting in the Fall of 2021.

Funding will be a two step process:

    1. Short Proposals:

Five (5) grants of $60,000 ($30,000 each side) for a period of one year will be awarded to support five pairs of Weizmann and UCLA scientists. Funds will be used for the development of collaborative projects, and can cover supplies and/or partial salary support for students or postdocs. These funds must also support the requirement for a member of each lab to spend a minimum of two weeks in the collaborative partner’s laboratory.

There are no official forms. The proposal must consist of the following parts (in a single file):

      • Title Page, containing the Title of the proposal, names, departments and contact information of the Principal Investigators, as well as names and departmental affiliations of all Co-PIs, if applicable.
      • Project Summary, including a description of the project and the problem being addressed, the current state of the field, potential impact of project success (2 pages, including all figures)
      • Two page curriculum vitae
      • No budget is required for the short proposals.

      • Full proposals:

At the end of the first year each collaborative pair funded at the 1st phase will submit a full proposal, and two (2) projects will be selected for further funding at $140,000/yr for two years ($70,000 per side per year).

There are no official forms. The proposal must consist of the following 7 parts (in a single file):

PART A: Title page, containing the following details: title of the proposal, names of the principal investigators and their addresses, telephone, fax and e-mail. Please specify on the title page of the application "This application is submitted for consideration within the Weizmann — UCLA Joint Research Program."

    PART B: Abstract (half page).

PART C: Research plan (up to 3 pages in length, not including figures and references). The research plan can discuss likely targets for extramural funding proposals for the project after completion of this award.

PART D: Proposed detailed budget, including a breakdown of the division of funds, separated into distinct budgets for WIS and UCLA, approved by the WIS Finance division.

PART E: Description of the mode of collaboration (half page). In addition, a letter by each of the cooperating PIs expressing his/her interest in the project and describing his/her role, should be appended.

PART F: Two page curriculum vitae for principal investigators with key publications and current funding — including the title of the project(s), co-investigators, funding period, and amount of the award(s).

PART G: Indicate whether any research activities will require review by institutional review boards for human subjects, animal research, or biohazards.

We encourage interested faculty to identify potential collaborators and to contact them directly to initiate discussions about potential projects. These studies should build on existing overlap between high priority projects in the collaborating laboratories, address an important issue, and have the potential to develop into an exciting long-term collaboration.

    Important dates:

    • June 14, 2020: Submission of short proposals
    • July 15, 2020: Announcement of awardees
    • June 1, 2021: Submission of full proposals
    • July 15, 2021: Announcement of awardees

All proposals (short and full) must be submitted via e-mail using electronic (Microsoft Word or Adobe PDF) format to Yael Karhash (yael.karhash@weizmann.ac.il) at the RGP/Weizmann and Dion Baybridge at UCLA (DBaybridge@mednet.ucla.edu).

The same proposal, i.e. a duplicate, must be submitted in parallel by the two collaborators.
The selection of projects will be made by an internal committee of Weizmann and UCLA neuroscientists.

    With best regards,
