My primary research interest is in the field of neurocardiology. Our initial work defined the primary elements of the intrinsic cardiac nervous system (ICNS) and how they interacted together to control regional cardiac function in the normal heart. Our subsequent work demonstrated that the progression of cardiac disease reflects maladaptive interactions between the cardiac nervous system and the heart. Our recent work has demonstrated that targeting select elements within this neural network can lead to efficacious results in select cardiac disease states, including atrial arrhythmias, myocardial infarction, and congestive heart failure. With appropriate neuromodulation therapy, myocytes are rendered stress resistance, autonomic responsiveness for control of the heart is preserved, and the potential for fatal arrhythmias is reduced. My laboratory also has a major interest in technology development with major efforts in evolving technologies for high density form/fit electrodes for cardiac electrophysiology and interfaces and equipment allowing for real time detection of intra-myocardial and trans-organ neurotransmitter detection.
