On Friday, June 3, DGSOM celebrated a return to an in-person commencement ceremony at Dickson Court North after two years of virtual ceremonies.

One hundred and fifty seven (157) graduates became doctors, receiving their doctoral hoods and reciting the Hippocratic Oath. The medical student graduates also committed to the Class Promise, led  by Class of 2022 Vice President Justin C. Zhang, MD.  Graduates then translated the promise in 17 languages — from Arabic, French, Igbo, Marathi, Spanish, Tagalog to Vietnamese.

Ms. Isabel Wilkerson was this year's commencement speaker. A Pulitzer Prize and the National Humanities Medal winner, Wilkerson is the author of The New York Times bestsellers The Warmth of Other Suns and Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents, which was selected as the DGSOM Common Book for Academic Year 2021-2022 and has informed students' collective conversations and curricular activities throughout the year.

Student speakers included an introduction by Class of 2022 President Vivian JiaYin Hu, MD and a speech by LeeAnn Kai-Yin Li, MD, PhD.

Interim Dean Steven M. Dubinett, MD presented the Sherman M. Mellinkoff Faculty Award to Oscar Joe Hines, MD and the Wilbur S. Schwartz, MD Prize for Kindness, Compassion, and Humanity to Arleen Brown, MD, PhD.
