Brent Fogel, MD, PhD is an Associate Professor-in-Residence in the Departments of Neurology and Human Genetics at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and a member of the Neuroscience and Bioinformatics Interdepartmental Graduate Programs. Dr. Fogel’s research seeks to understand how genetic mutations and associated impairment of genetic pathways leads to neurodegenerative disorders such as spinocerebellar ataxia or neurodevelopmental conditions such as autism. Clinically, Dr. Fogel directs the UCLA Clinical Neurogenomics Research Center, a department-wide program in Neurology designed to promote and facilitate access to genomic and other cellular and molecular research studies for all UCLA Neurology patients. He also directs the UCLA Neurogenetics Clinic where his work focuses of the use of genomic sequencing to identify rare and novel causes of neurological disease. Dr. Fogel also diagnoses and treats various disorders of balance and coordination in the UCLA Ataxia Center. He has authored multiple research and clinical articles, reviews, and book chapters on spinocerebellar ataxia, clinical neurogenetics, and neurodevelopmental disease. Dr. Fogel’s work has been funded, in part, by the American Academy of Neurology/American Brain Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, and the National Ataxia Foundation.
