Neurochemical Changes in Youth with and At-Risk for Bipolar Disorder

Our next lecture for 2025 is on magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) of bipolar disorder (BPD)... one of the most complicated… challenging… fascinating… even dangerous conditions in psychiatry with a suicide rate 60 times that of the general population. BPD is notorious for its phases (depressive, euthymic, hypomania, manic, and mixed) and facultative psychotic features. A chronic condition, BPD is a major cause of global disability, affects 1-3% of world population, and is frequently attended by major medical illness. BPD has multiple drug treatment options yet many patients remain refractory. Hence, the need for continued study of the brain in BPD with MRS and other imaging. Here we will focus on the brain in pediatric BPD.
Our speaker, Dr. Melissa DelBello, Chair of Psychiatry at Cincinnati, is one of the best-know child psychiatrists in the US and renowned around the World. Pediatric BPD has long been her clinical and research specialty with a steady stream of impressive contributions, including numerous imaging projects in multiple modalities, clinical studies, and clinical trials. Please join us for a deeply informed update on pediatric BPD.
