Dr. Emilie Marcus, joined the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA in March 2018 as Executive Strategy Officer and Adjunct Professor, Biological Chemistry.  As ESO her responsibilities are centered on envisioning the future of a diverse and inclusive academic medical center including the foundational pillars of medical education, research, clinical care, and community outreach.  Dr. Marcus came to UCLA after a long and distinguished career at Cell Press, a global scientific publishing company, where she served as CEO and as Editor-in-Chief of the prestigious journal, Cell. Her leadership at Cell Press and stewardship of Cell with a commitment to quality and innovation has garnered her the respect of the global biomedical research community. She is viewed as a creative, thoughtful and influential opinion leader in science today and has made significant contributions to thinking on the future of biomedical research, the impact of new information technology, scientific reproducibility and ethics, peer review, and publishing business models.  Dr. Marcus earned a PhD in Biology from Yale University and conducted postdoctoral training at the University of California, San Diego and the Salk Institute. The common threads throughout her career are a passion for diversity in people and ideas, a love of science, a commitment to an inclusive supportive and fun work environment and an eagerness to always move out of her comfort zone.
