John Garcia
Master's Student
About
Originally from the San Fernando Valley, John graduated from UCLA with honors and a bachelor’s degree in molecular, cell, and developmental biology and a minor in history in 2023. After graduation, he began working as a genetic counseling intern at the USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center. In this role, he gained experience in an oncology genetic counseling clinic where he assisted in updating pedigrees and patient information, and consenting patients to various research studies. During this season, he also volunteered as a male case manager with the Open Arms Pregnancy Clinic. While the organization serves women and men who may be facing an unexpected pregnancy, John meets with the potential fathers to educate them about their possible decisions and provide support where they need it. Fueled by his passion for education and mentoring, John also currently works as an online mathematics tutor and substitute teacher. Each of these experiences has shown him the importance of certain skills, especially when interacting with others, such as active listening, teaching, and compassion. When he has free time, John enjoys spending time with his friends, going camping, and playing video games. As a future genetic counselor, John is looking forward to working in a clinical setting while also supporting future prospective genetic counselors. Similarly, using his experiences as a reapplicant to genetic counseling programs, he hopes to inspire and encourage others who may find themselves in the same position.
