Dr. Xiao is primarily interested in understanding how the unexpectedly small number of genes in our cells leads to the extraordinary spectrum of phenotypic diversity. In particular, she focuses on RNA processing and regulation which have proved pivotal to human health and disease. She uses a combination of approaches in genomics, bioinformatics, molecular biology and systems biology. This work is made possible by the revolutionary high-throughput sequencing technologies that have transformed modern biology into an information-rich science. She also serves as the Director of the Bioinformatics Interdepartmental Program.
