Congratulations to Alejandra Casillas, MD, MSHS on receiving the Faculty Award for Student Development in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion from the UCLA Academic Senate.
Dr. Casillas is one of four UCLA faculty who are the 2022 recipients of this award from the Academic Senate. The awardees exemplify extraordinary accomplishments in leadership, innovation, initiatives, inclusiveness, and creativity to foster and promote diversity.
"I joined the UCLA faculty in large part to be a voice for my community in academia, having been raised in a low-income immigrant neighborhood in Los Angeles. Building programs and supports for my students and trainees who come from similarly diverse and/or first-generation backgrounds is deeply meaningful work to me, and so I am very honored and humbled at the recognition of these efforts,” Dr. Casillas shared.
The award honors a faculty member who has excelled in teaching and mentoring a diverse student body, has taught or is currently teaching a large number of undergraduate classes, has aided in the development of academic support or mentoring programs, has established pipeline programs from high schools and community colleges, has created curricula enabling students to appreciate the dynamics of inter-group relations by enhancing free exchange of ideas surrounding controversial issues, or has developed teaching methods that are especially inclusive and interactive.
