Investing in a Brighter Future
A unique environment to cultivate creativity and brilliance
UCLA Faculty, both physicians and researchers, are dedicated to training the next generation of neuroscientists including undergraduate, graduate and medical students, as well as residents, postdoctoral and clinical fellows. The goal of UCLA Neuroscience is to support cutting edge training and research initiatives to understand brain function, development and disease and to convert this understanding to therapies.
Research Trainees
Graduate Programs in Bioscience is a consortium of 10 home areas and their affiliated Ph.D. programs, organized to provide the best possible research training and professional development for graduate students pursuing Ph.D.s in the life and biomedical sciences.
Residency and Fellowship Trainees
We provide a supportive and challenging educational environment within which residents and fellows with diverse backgrounds can prepare themselves for careers characterized by commitment to excellence in patient care, research, teaching and lifelong learning.
Previous Neuroscience Events
Art and Neuroscience
We are honored to have collaborated with the Hammer Museum to bring together a night of discussions around the intersection of neuroscience and art with Nobel Laureate Eric Kandel and world-renowned artist Kerry Tribe.
Brain Awareness Week
UCLA undergraduate and graduate students in neuroscience organized Brain Awareness Week, sponsored by UCLA’s Brain Research Institute, is to raise interest in research and get students thinking about careers in science.
Grey Matters
The UCLA Neuroscience Research Theme proudly presents the "Grey Matters" series; panel discussions with experts in brain research. Previous topics included "Unveiling Mysteries of Brain Disease" and "The Lifetime of a Memory."
UCLA Neuroscience Education and Workshop Events
The UCLA Neuroscience Community and the Brain Research Institute sponsor a number of regularly-scheduled seminars and lectures, special workshops and symposia. The weekly Joint Seminars in Neuroscience series brings scientists of national and international repute to UCLA to meet with faculty, postdoctoral fellows, and students, and to present a lecture to the neuroscience community.
Joint Seminars in Neuroscience
The Joint Seminars in Neuroscience series is subsidized by the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and cosponsored by the BRI and the Semel Institute for Neuroscience & Human Behavior. The Joint Seminars in Neuroscience Committee chooses the invited lecturers, and one faculty member hosts each visitor. Each year, the Joint Seminars in Neuroscience program brings more than 25 leading neuroscientists to UCLA. Each Tuesday at noon, an audience of neuroscientists gather to hear these speakers, who also meet with small groups for more focused discussions. These seminars and their accompanying receptions provide a weekly opportunity for faculty, postdocs, and graduate students to convene.
The Annual Neuroscience Poster Day
The Annual Neuroscience Poster Day usually draws over 300 people to Ackerman Union’s Grand Ballroom. This annual event brings together the entire UCLA neuroscience community.
Conferences and Symposia
The BRI sponsors or cosponsors conferences and symposia during the academic year. Among some of the events scheduled during the academic year are the Annual Neural Microcircuits Training Program Symposium, the Annual Center for Neurobiology of Stress Basis and Translational Science Symposium, and the Annual UCLA Learning and Memory Symposium.
Affinity Groups
BRI-sponsored affinity groups provide opportunities for faculty and trainees to discuss current research in their field of interest.
