Grey Matters
Breathing Matters
January 24, 2024
Throughout our lives, we breathe up to a billion times! Breathing is exquisitely controlled starting at birth with our first breath, but when it goes wrong it is life-threatening. Research into what regulates breathing has revolutionized our understanding of this vital process and has uncovered a deep relationship between breathing and emotion. In parallel, breathwork training has emerged as a lifesaving therapy for anxiety, depression, loneliness, and suicide in the United States and around the world.
In our latest symposium in our “Grey Matters” series, our distinguished faculty, Drs. Helen Lavretsky and Jack Feldman, discussed the science of breathing and how we can leverage this knowledge to improve health and well-being.

The Developing Brain
April 29, 2021
The human brain contains about 100 billion neurons connected to each other by over 100 trillion connections. There is an extraordinary diversity of neurons with different functions and these are connected to each other in very specific ways. The structure and function of the brain, indeed who we are, reflects the interplay between genetic programs and our experiences during childhood and adolescence. Panelists discussed exciting new developments in this field, the genetic basis of neuropsychiatric disorders, and how our experiences change the structure and function of our brains. This webinar features previous School of Medicine Dean Kelsey Martin, M.D., Ph.D., Larry Zipursky, Ph.D., Aparna Bhaduri, Ph.D., Joshua Trachtenberg, Ph.D., Daniel Geschwind, M.D., Ph.D., Adriana Galván, Ph.D.

The Lifetime of a Memory
November 29, 2018
Our second symposium of the “Grey Matters" series, "The Lifetime of a Memory,” focused on the study of memory function and groundbreaking research initiatives on memory disorders. There are many approaches and methods to understanding how the brain develops and works, including how memories are created, stored, and recalled. The goal of the physicians, scientists, postdoctoral fellows and graduate students that comprise UCLA Neuroscience is to deepen this understanding and to leverage this knowledge to uncover the causes of brain disorders and to develop effective and transformational therapies to treat them. We are committed to this mission and greatly appreciate your support of our efforts.

Unveiling Mysteries of Brain Disease
March 21, 2018
At the inaugural event of the "Grey Matters" series, “Unveiling Mysteries of Brain Disease,” our panel discussed breakthroughs in research and treatments for brain diseases. Guests were also able to meet with the physician-scientists during the “Meet-the-Experts” portion of the evening and ask specific questions about their work. This sold-out event was an informative and inspirational evening, and we thank our guests and supporters for their interest and dedication to the Neuroscience Theme and the “Grey Matters" series.
