How can AI-powered brain-computer interfaces help people with paralysis?
Brain health isn't just about preventing decline — it's about restoring what's been lost.
Jonathan Kao, Associate Professor at UCLA and David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, is doing exactly that. His Pioneer Award from The National Institutes of Health will support AI-powered brain-computer interfaces that help people with paralysis fold laundry, open doors and pick up objects using only brain signals and a wearable headset. No surgery. In early tests, a participant with paralysis could only complete a robotic arm task when the AI copilot was active. That's not a research result. That's a life changed.
