The DGSOM is internationally recognized as a leader in medical education, patient care, public service, and, importantly, research. The DGSOM and UCLA Health websites describe numerous scientific discoveries that lead to medical advances emerging every year from our laboratories and clinics.  Our seven themes facilitate multidisciplinary impactful collaborations. The seven themes are cancer; cardiovascular conditions; health equity and translational social science; immunity, inflammation, infection and transplantation; metabolism; neuroscience; and regenerative medicine.

In fiscal year 2023, UCLA ranked 12th nationally in National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding, receiving 888 awards totaling over $578 million. Of the $1.6 billion awarded to UCLA from federal agencies, industry sponsors, nonprofits, state government, and higher education institutions, the DGSOM successfully secured $1.1 billion.

We have more than 1,300 post-graduate training positions, providing a unique opportunity to inspire, encourage and prepare the next generation of physicians and physician-scientists to question and explore in order to uncover even small pieces solving big puzzles and thus improving life for our patients. Over 230 residents and fellows have completed our Specialty Training and Advance Research (STAR) Program, which provides graduate level research training. More than 80% of these trainees remain in academic research or industry research careers.

Our mentors are able to convey their fulfilling experience in research and the extraordinary satisfaction of discovery. Emerging technologies are enabling more direct pathways from discovery to clinical care thus benefiting our patients.

Today’s discoveries are tomorrow’s medical textbooks. By providing evidenced-based medical care, we have the privilege and opportunity to take part in the beneficial results of academic medical discovery and translation.
