Much has been accomplished in since the opening of the Larry L. Hillblom Islet Research Center. The goals of the Larry L. Hillblom Islet Research Center become ever more important with the increasing epidemic of both type 1 and 2 diabetes and the consequences of diabetes on those afflicted. There are less than 2,000 diabetes trained physicians in the USA with more than 20,000,000 people with diabetes. While the pharmaceutical industry invests substantially in diabetes research, the development and sales of the products are for the benefit of the company’s shareholders. While the interests of the pharmaceutical companies and people with diabetes can intersect, this is not necessarily the case. High quality independent scientific evaluation of proposed new therapies becomes an increasingly important role of University based research. Moreover, development of new approaches for therapy most often arises from University based research. Generating new young scientists trained in research methods rests on academic units such as the Larry L. Hillblom Islet Research Center.
