Overview
The Faculty Development Program for Physicians Caring for LGBTQ+ Populations seeks to empower early-career faculty to provide exceptional care to LGBTQ+ populations and to build the capacity of participating faculty to contribute to education, training, and scholarship in the field of LGBTQ+ health. This program will amplify DGSOM at UCLA as a leader in providing compassionate care to LGBTQ+ populations and in training physicians to effectively serve populations traditionally marginalized by medicine.
This program will provide faculty with the clinical training and education necessary to deliver holistic health care unique to LGBTQ+ populations

Note: Acceptance into the UCLA DGSOM Faculty Development Program for Physicians Caring for LGBTQ+ Populations Program is determined through a competitive selection process in which approximately 5 candidates are chosen annually.
Applicant Requirements
This program is open for application from UCLA faculty, including those at affiliated sites, in Internal Medicine, Medicine-Pediatrics, Pediatrics, and Family Medicine who are specifically interested in advancing their knowledge and skills in the areas of Gender-Affirming Health Care (adult and/or pediatric) or HIV Treatment and Management.
If accepted, a letter of support from your Department Chair or Division Chief indicating 10% clinical release time for the one-year period will be required within four weeks of acceptance notification. The leadership of the Faculty Development Program can assist with supporting materials for this request.
2024-2025 Program Outline
- Twice monthly clinical preceptorship sessions with an experienced mentor in the field of interest
- Monthly educational sessions with Program Leads
- Monthly structured self-directed learning sessions with curricular support
- Ongoing mentorship in integrating informed LGBTQ+ care delivery in clinical settings
- Ongoing mentorship in case discussions and reflections
- Teaching opportunities within the DGSOM’s LGBTQ+ curriculum
- Support in completion of a scholarly project such as a case report or QI project
The UCLA DGSOM Faculty Development Program for Physicians Caring for LGBTQ+ Populations
The Faculty Development Program for Physicians Caring for LGBTQ+ Populations seeks to empower early-career faculty to provide exceptional care to LGBTQ+ people and to build the capacity of participating faculty to contribute to education, training, and scholarship in the field of LGBTQ+ health. This program will provide faculty with the clinical training and education necessary to deliver holistic health care unique to LGBTQ+ populations.
The program currently offers two areas of focus. Applicants will be asked to specify their preferred pathway. The Gender-Affirming Health Care Pathway will provide in depth education about gender-affirming hormonal and surgical care. The HIV Primary Care Pathway will provide in depth education on the treatment, management, and prevention of HIV. Applicants who select the HIV Primary Care Pathway will be prepared to submit for optional HIV credentialing under the American Academic of HIV Medicine at the completion of the program. Additional topics addressed during the year-long program include the following, with unique considerations for each pathway:
- Optimal health care delivery for populations historically marginalized
- Care across the age spectrum, from pediatrics to geriatrics
- Preventative care considerations
- Behavioral health conditions and treatment
- Sexually transmitted infection risk reduction, screening and treatment
- HIV prevention, through counseling and pharmacotherapy
- Substance use screening, brief intervention, treatment and/or referral for treatment
- Counseling on fertility preservation and assisted reproduction

Program Structure
This one-year program will start on July 1st, 2024. If accepted, Program Leadership will assist mentees in obtaining departmental approval for 10% support (one half-day weekly) for participation in this program.
