UCLA GME International Medical Graduate Policy
UCLA GME INTERNATIONAL MEDICAL GRADUATE POLICY
PURPOSE
The purpose of this policy is to set a standard for assessment of international medical graduates (IMGs) applying for positions in UCLA GME training programs.
SCOPE
This policy applies to all ACGME-accredited training programs at UCLA.
DEFINITIONS
ECFMG: Educational Commission of Foreign Medical Graduates
IMG: International Medical Graduate
USMLE: United States Medical Licensing Examination
POLICY
The Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) assesses the readiness of IMGs to enter US residency or fellowship programs that are accredited by the ACGME.
ECFMG certification is required for IMGs to enter ACGME-accredited training at UCLA. Applicants wishing to be certified by ECFMG must meet medical education credential
requirements and examination requirements, including passage of USMLE Steps 1 and 2.
All IMG applicants must be reviewed with the GME/DIO prior to offering a position in order to confirm the applicant is eligible for appointment. Submission form can be found on MedHub – GME Forms – International Medical Graduate and Visa Holder Request.
To continue and complete ACGME-accredited training at UCLA, IMGs must meet licensure requirements to practice medicine in California.
If US Work Authorization will be required, please see UCLA GME Visa Policy.
