Trainee Outcomes
The Training Grant in Genomic Analysis and Interpretation (GATP) has been training the next generation of genomic scientists at UCLA for 25 years. Across the full history of the program, 93% of GATP trainees who completed their training earned earned a PhD, with an average time to degree of 5.6 years — well below the national average for biomedical PhDs. GATP alumni go on to careers spanning the full genomic research workforce: graduates hold positions as scientists and research leaders at leading genomics and pharmaceutical companies including Regeneron Genetics Center, Genentech, Merck, GSK, Johnson & Johnson Innovative Medicine, Gilead Sciences, and Natera; as postdoctoral researchers and faculty at institutions including Princeton University, UC Riverside, UC Davis, University of Washington, and the Broad Institute; and in government research at the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI). Several alumni have gone on to receive prestigious independent fellowships and grants, including NIH F31 and F32 awards and an HHMI Fellowship, reflecting the caliber of scientific training GATP provides. With a dual-track curriculum combining experimental genetics and computational genomics — and dedicated training in the responsible application of artificial intelligence to genomic data — GATP prepares students for the demands of 21st-century genomic research across academia, industry, and government.
