Prepare

  • Obtain a map of all emergency exits, staircases and fire alarm pull stations in your building
  • Determine possible escape routes and locations of the nearest building exits.

Respond

  • When you hear the fire alarm, evacuate! DO NOT ASSUME IT IS A FALSE ALARM OR A DRILL
  • Check evacuation routes for smoke. If unsafe, take an alternate route
  • Authorities may direct you to leave if you are in danger or within the greatest potential path of the fire
  • If a voluntary evacuation order is issued for your area or you are directed by authorities to evacuate the area:
    • Take only essential items with you
    • Follow the designated evacuation routes and expect heavy traffic
  • If you are ordered to shelter-in-place and/or NOT to evacuate:
  • When smoke levels are high, do not use anything that burns and adds to indoor air pollution, such as candles, fireplaces and gas stoves
  • Monitor air quality reports and health warnings about smoke.
