Dr. Madrenas awarding the exceptional physician award

Each year in the Spring, UCLA Health and the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA recognize physicians who demonstrate the values of Compassion, Respect, Excellence, Discovery, Integrity, and Teamwork with the Exceptional Physician Awards.

After a system-wide call for nominations, an extensive review process, and endorsement by their department Chair, the following three physicians were chosen for a 2025 Exceptional Physician Award:

Dr. Brian DiCarlo prioritizes building trust and strong relationships with patients and their families, offering not only medical expertise but also emotional support. Whether it's taking extra time to explain complex treatment plans, or offering words of encouragement during challenging moments, he makes sure each patient feels heard, valued, and cared for. This focus on patient-centered care extends to understanding the broader context of a patient’s life—acknowledging the fears, hopes, and unique circumstances they bring to their cancer journey. His empathy is genuine.”

Dr. Mary Sehl’s approach to ‘healing humankind’ beautifully exemplifies the essence of compassionate, patient-centered care. By seeing her patients not just as individuals with illnesses but as whole people with complex emotional, psychological, and physical needs, she fosters a therapeutic environment rooted in empathy and respect. Her focus on building trust and empowering her patients reflects a deep understanding of the human experience, recognizing that healing is a multifaceted process that involves more than just treating symptoms.”

Dr. Sun M. Yoo consistently demonstrates respect for the whole person, and the healing she provides extends beyond just the physical body. She takes a comprehensive approach in assessing and caring for emotional and psychosocial needs for all patients. She has a deep respect for the diversity of her patients as she approaches every patient with an open mind, respecting their cultural, religious, and personal beliefs. Dr. Yoo creates a safe and inclusive environment for all her patients and builds strong and collaborative relationships; her inclusive, compassionate and respectful approach makes a meaningful impactful impact on the lives she serves.”
