Newly Appointed Associate Dean for Health AI Strategy and Innovation

Dear Colleagues:
We are writing to announce the appointment of Katherine P. Andriole, PhD, as the inaugural Associate Dean for Health Artificial Intelligence (AI) Strategy and Innovation at the David Geffen School of Medicine (DGSOM) and Director for the UCLA Center for AI and SMART Health, effective February 1, 2026. Dr. Andriole will also hold an appointment as Professor of Radiological Sciences at the DGSOM.
In this position, she will help to shape and drive the AI vision and strategy for the DGSOM across research, education and innovation, and ensure translation of innovation in our health system, partnering closely with the Chief AI Officer for UCLA Health. She will also work collaboratively with academic leadership, faculty, staff and trainees to harness the power of AI to transform biomedical research, decision and implementation science and precision health.
Dr. Andriole is currently an Associate Professor of Radiology at Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School and Director of Academic Research and Education at Mass General Brigham AI. She has been involved in Radiological Imaging Informatics and Biomedical Data Science for more than 30 years with an interest in using concepts from computer science, engineering and informatics to advance medical research, augment medical education and ultimately improve clinical care. She majored in Biomedical Engineering at Duke University where she was an Angier B. Duke Scholar, studying Twentieth Century English Literature at Oxford University. At Yale University, Dr. Andriole studied Electrical Engineering and Medicine where her PhD research was in classical machine learning. She completed fellowships in the Departments of Radiology at the University of California at Los Angeles and the University of California at San Francisco where she was involved in building, implementing and evaluating picture archiving and communication systems (PACS) before they became commercial entities. She was one of the early adopters of Computed Radiography (CR) using CR for the first time in newborns including premature infants.
A passionate educator, Dr. Andriole has mentored more than 110 trainees, and her research has involved technical as well as clinically-relevant developments in medical imaging informatics, machine learning and Artificial Intelligence. She has served in multiple leadership roles for the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA), the American College of Radiology (ACR), the Society for Imaging Informatics in Medicine (SIIM), the Society for Photo-optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE), and the Academy for Radiology and Biomedical Imaging Research (ARBIR). She is the Senior Scientist for Education at the ACR Data Science Institute and is on the Editorial Board for the Journal of Imaging Informatics in Medicine, an Associate Editor for the SPIE Journal of Medical Imaging and Senior Consulting Editor for Radiology: Artificial Intelligence.
The recipient of numerous awards and honors, Dr. Andriole has received the RSNA Lifetime Honored Educator Award, the Gold Medal of SIIM, the RSNA Gold Medal, and the inaugural RADxx Trailblazer Award recognizing a pioneering woman leader in Imaging Informatics.
