This course will introduce clinicians to the emerging field of nature as medicine, integrating evidence-based practices in ecotherapy, forest bathing, sensory utilization, horticultural therapy and meditation. The format will be an on-site visit to an organic regenerative farm, providing hands-on experience with nature’s role in improving physical and mental health outcomes. Additionally, the course will highlight the role of nature in supporting high-nutrient food production, optimal harvesting techniques and reducing environmental toxins.

Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Discuss the latest research on nature-based medicine and its impact on mental and cardiovascular health.
  2. Explain the proposed physiological and psychological mechanisms by which nature exposure benefits health.
  3. Apply practices of nature-based medicine activities such as forest bathing, horticultural therapy, home gardening, activity in green spaces and activity in blue spaces in appropriate clinical settings.
  4. Recognize best practices for obtaining and growing food that is grown organically; for optimal nutrient density of fruits and vegetables; and for reducing personal exposure to environmental pollutants.
  5. Understand the role of indoor mechanisms, including houseplants, filtration systems, and light exposure in improving overall well-being.
