LaMar Hasbrouck, M.D. ’94, is the recipient of the 2023 UCLA Award for Public Service. A deeply committed and respected leader who champions solutions to public health’s most difficult problems, Dr. Hasbrouck has led efforts to achieve health equity at the local, state, federal and international level throughout periods of tremendous growth and change.
Dr. Hasbrouck currently serves as the chief operating officer for the Cook County Department of Public Health in Illinois, advocating for improved environmental and social conditions for 2.5 million residents. With more than 30 years of experience, he was actively engaged in two of the largest global health initiatives in history: polio eradication and the U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Hasbrouck earned his doctorate from the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, where he was awarded the Charles D. O'Malley Prize in Medical History and was recognized as a dean’s scholar. He chose this medical school because of its commitment to public service and returned in 2022 as the commencement speaker for the Drew-UCLA Medical Education Program graduation.
Dr. Hasbrouck grew up in a community without access to preventive health care, which gives him unique insight into tackling persistent health disparities. He has leveraged partnerships to drive solutions and has chosen roles where he has an impact. He served millions of citizens as executive director for the National Association of County and City Health Officials and as the director of the Illinois Department of Public Health.
A tireless advocate for systemic improvements in public health, Dr. Hasbrouck has been honored with numerous awards, and is often called on to share his expertise. He has authored two books: “COVID Bytes: Musings of a Disease Detective” and his memoir, “G Street Lion: Stalking a Dream.”
Building pathways for doctors from diverse backgrounds advances health equity. Dr. Hasbrouck regularly participates in the American Medical Association's Doctors Back to School program, serving as a professional role model to children from marginalized communities. His dedication to serving the public is inspiring and central to his life’s work, embodying the UCLA mission of public service.
