Residents As Teachers Policy
Purpose
To formalize the responsibilities of residents and fellows in their roles as teachers and supervisors of medical students.
Overview
Residents and fellows play an important instructional role in the clinical education of medical students. In order to fulfill that responsibility, residents and fellows need to be familiar with the competencies expected of clinical medical students and have orientation and faculty development resources available to enhance their teaching and assessment skills.
Policy
- *Residents and fellows who will be in teaching roles must complete designated required educational modules as assigned by the Office of Curricular Affairs. Completion is monitored centrally by the Dean’s Office.
- *Residents and fellows who evaluate or assess medical students will be sent annually the medical school’s program objectives, relevant clerkship objectives, and the clinical grading policy and rubric, and provide an annual online attestation form acknowledging their receipt and review.
- *Residents and fellows who teach, supervise, and assess medical students shall complete evaluations in a timely manner for medical students with whom they interact.
*By residents and fellows we are referring to post-graduate medical trainees in ACGME accredited
programs.
