Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED) is now accepting submissions for the 42nd annual William Carlos Williams poetry competition. We welcome submissions from medical students currently enrolled in schools of allopathic or osteopathic medicine located in the US, Puerto Rico, and Canada.
Faculty and Staff: Please share this call for submissions with your medical students--we look forward to reviewing their creative work!
Medical students: submit your poetry to the annual William Carlos Williams poetry competition, sponsored by Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED)! The competition will accept submissions through midnight eastern time on December 31, 2023.
Each year, the William Carlos Williams competition receives hundreds of entries, which are judged by the Wick Poetry Center at Kent State University. The top three prize-winning poems will receive a monetary award ($300, $200, and $100 for first, second, and third place, respectively) and will be considered for publication in the Journal of Medical Humanities. The winning poets are invited to read their poetry alongside an esteemed guest and receive commendation in a formal awards ceremony at the Health Humanities Consortium’s annual conference in April 10-13, 2024. Past featured speakers include the physician writers Rafael Campo, John Stone, Audrey Shafer, Dagan Coppock, David Watts, Jay Baruch, Amy Haddad, and Amit Majmudar (NEOMED graduate and Ohio’s first poet laureate).
