Your Medical Residency Application Roadmap

A step-by-step guide on applying for a medical residency

Match Day 2023

Throughout the year, we will walk you through the medical residency application, interviewing, and ranking processes. We will meet with your class to discuss fourth-year scheduling, an introduction to the Colleges, how to request letters of recommendation, evaluations, and the MSPE (dean’s letter).

Look out for regular updates and reminders about the upcoming meetings as the dates approach as well as weekly emails entitled, "Residency Updates from the SAO" which include the latest information, strategies, events, and announcements.

Medical Residency Application FAQs

ERAS Tokens are issued in early June.

The MSPE is a letter of evaluation, not a letter of recommendation, that summarizes your academic and professional performance throughout medical school. For the DGSOM Medical Student Performance Evaluation Policy, please see the handbook.

Medical Student Handbook

  • The MSPE Questionnaire is the first step in drafting your MSPE.
  • The MSPE Questionnaire will be shared with your assistant dean and the student affairs deans to draft strong noteworthy characteristics, as well as to provide guidance and advising as you begin the residency application process.
  • Once the MSPE Questionnaires are completed, you will meet first with your assistant dean and then with either Dr. Miller or Dr. Calmes to finalize the noteworthy characteristics.
  • In the event that you wish to have a different dean write your MSPE or Noteworthy Characteristics, please communicate directly with Jason Bergschneider.
  • MSPE Questionnaire Qualtrics link for the rising fourth-year class is sent via email. Please contact Jason Bergschneider if you have any questions.

Jason Bergschneider is your primary staff contact throughout the residency application process, along with your College Chairs, mentors, and Student Affairs Deans.
