The UCLA MPGMG is comprised of four core sites: UCLA Medical Center and the Center for Health Sciences/Olive View UCLA Medical Center, the VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System, Harbor UCLA Medical Center, and the Anna and Harry Borun Center for Gerontological Research. As a result of generous philanthropic support, the MPGMG has been able to establish three awards recognizing excellence in clinical teaching and public facing community engaged research; innovation in population health, dementia, or advanced illness management; and a career of distinguished service to the MPGMG.

We are seeking nominations for the 2025 awards, including:

  1. The Drs. Dan and Erna Osterweil Award for Innovation in Geriatric Medicine, which is designed to recognize and support junior- and senior-level UCLA faculty or staff for innovation in the areas of population health, dementia, or advanced illness management. Preference will be given to innovations that have been at least piloted and may be ready for full implementation or dissemination. The nomination requires a letter of nomination, which can be a self-nomination; the curriculum vitae of the nominee; and a description of the intervention. The nomination letter and description of the intervention can be up to two pages each, single-spaced, 11-point font with 1-inch margins on all sides. The awardee is expected to present the innovation at the UCLA Intensive Course in Geriatric Medicine & Board Review, which will be held virtually in September 2025. In addition to the designation, the Award will include a monetary sum of approximately $5,000. The 2023 recipient was Neil Wenger, M.D., and in 2024, Patricia Harris, M.D., M.S., received the award.
  2. The Arthur Cherkin Award, which is awarded to a senior faculty member for a career of distinguished service to the MPGMG. The awardee must be at the Associate or Full Professor rank. This award is not restricted to MPGMG faculty, but the recipient needs to have served the MPGMG for many years. The nomination requires a letter of nomination, which can be a self-nomination, and the nominee’s curriculum vitae. The nomination letter can be up to two pages, single-spaced, 11-point font with 1-inch margins on all sides. The 2023 recipient was Linda Sohn, M.D., and in 2024, David Ganz, M.D., Ph.D., received the award.
  3. The Renata ’58, MA ’61, MA ’66 and Peter ’51, MD ‘56 Landres Award for Clinical Teaching and Research Excellence recognizes and supports senior-level MPGMG faculty and staff who have demonstrated excellence in clinical teaching or public-facing community-engaged research that improves the health or well-being of older persons. The nomination requires a letter of nomination, which can be a self-nomination, that can be up to two pages, single-spaced, 11-point font with 1-inch margins on all sides and the curriculum vitae of the nominee. In addition to the designation, the Award will include a monetary sum of approximately $5,000. The 2023 recipient was Grace Chen, M.D., and in 2024, Erin Cook, M.D., received the award.

All nominations are due Monday, March 24, 2025. Previous recipients of awards are not eligible for the same award. The selection process is expected to be completed by mid-April 2025.
