Language is a social driver of health. Conducting language equity research requires expanding beyond the historically static "limited English proficient" variable to a multidimensional construct that is dynamic and relational. To do this, we must account for clinician language skills as well as patient language preferences. This presentation will discuss a novel language equity framework as well as recent advancements in language proficiency assessment through the Physician Oral Language Observation Matrix (POLOM) for medical Spanish certification.
