Vence Bonham, JD

Associate Investigator and Acting Deputy Director of the National Human Genome Research Institute

The field of human genetics has grappled with conceptualizing and describing geographic and population-based genetic variation and similarity. The transparent use of population descriptors in genetics and genomics research is of critical scientific importance for advancing rigorous research. This lecture will discuss the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) report on Using Population Descriptors in Genetics and Genomics Research. Mr. Bonham will examine the ethical, legal, and social implications of the historic and current use of population descriptors in genetics. He will also discuss challenges and opportunities to advance health equity in genetics and genomics research today.
